Shida Kartli is an eastern region of Georgia, located in a central part of the lowland between Greater and Lesser Caucasus, it is bordered by the Russian Federation on the North, Mtskheta-Mtianeti to the East, Kvemo Kartli to the South, Samtskhe-Javakheti to the Southwest, Imereti to the West and Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti to the Northwest. The capital and the largest city is Gori. Shida Katli includes such municipalities as Gori, Kaspi, Kareli, Java, and Khashuri. The name Shida Kartli literally translates as Inner Kartli. The region has a very favorable geographic location such as close proximity to the capital city, the East-West highway of international importance and the South Caucasus main railway that goes through the region.

The average height of the Shida Kartli terrain is 1,307 meter. The lowest point is at 473 meters in Kaspi municipality. On the Georgian controlled part of the region, the highest point is the mountain Arjevani (2,757.7 m). The climate of Shida Kartli is quite diverse, the central part of this region has a humid climate with cold winters and warm long summers. To the east from Gori, the climate is from dry subtropics to moderate humid subtropics. With cold winters and hot summers. Mainly the humid climate and comparatively warm temperature provide favorable conditions for life and economic activity.

The region has natural sites with rich flora and fauna. Here are such natural resources as a wide variety of soils, forests (occupying 46% of the region’s territory), water and other resources (e.g. recreational). The mineral resources of the region include iron, silver, gold, lead, zinc. Among other mineral resources, the region produces flux limestone, dolomite, paving stones, magmatic rocks, lightweight aggregates, furnace limestone, brick clay, etc.

One of the most interesting spot to explore in Shida Kartli is an ancient cave city Uplistsikhe near Gori and Stalin Museum in the center of Gori.
