Tusheti is one of the most remote areas of Georgia, with amazing and untouched nature and landscapes, which is located at 5,413 -14,740 feet above sea level on the northern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Mountains and is eastern region of Kakheti. The population of the area is mainly ethnic Georgians called Tushs or Tushetians. Tusheti is divided on 4 mountain communities: the Tsova, the Gometsari, the Pirikiti and the Chaghma. And the largest village in Tusheti is Omalo which is the center of region, as well. It has just one access road going through the Abano pass (9, 350 ft). Alpine climate, fog, mist and low visibility, make the road even more dangerous. But, the views along the pass are just incredible, full of rivers, pine forests and alpine meadows. This road is usually opened in May then in autumn shepherds drive their flocks back to the lowlands and road soon gets blocked by snow.
One the main occupations of Tushs is sheep herding. Tushetian Guda cheese and high quality wool was famous and was exported to Europe and Russia, what is the leading branch of economy even now.
Tusheti is famous for summer hiking and horse-trekking, mountain trekking, for its fascinating high mountain regions and for clearest ecological system. Although, the road to Tusheti is considered as one the most dangerous roads in the world and to get to there is really a big challenge. So, it is a great place if you love mountain climbing, trekking and hiking, horse tours and bike tours are also involved.
Tusheti is surrounded not only by high mountains, but it also has numerous gorges, the water from which flow into the 2 major rivers of Tusheti – – Pirikiti’s Alazani and Tusheti’s (Gometsari) Alazani separated with the watershed of Makratela. Tusheti Protected Areas cover Tusheti Strict Nature Reserve, Tusheti National Park and Tusheti Protected Landscape. There total area is about 113,660.2 ha. Moreover, every village of Tusheti represent a historical monument in itself with stone towers and ancient architecture. There are monuments of cultural and economic value: summer dwellings and their adjacent territories in the gorges of Kvakhidistskali, Larovanistskali, upper stream of Gometsati’s Alazani and Tsovatistskali. Tusheti itself with the nomadic and romantic lifestyle of the Tushetians and summer icon-holidays has always attracted visitors.
Tusheti is considered as one of the interesting tourist sites. Tourists are attracted by its incredible nature, historical and cultural monuments, warm hospitality of Tushetian people and their culture and traditions. The best season to visit this amazing place is summer.
